Lyme disease treatment: 2 herbal compounds can beat antibiotics Lyme disease—transmitted by tick bite— affects thousands of people in the United States and around the world. Currently, doctors use antibiotics to treat it, but could plant-based remedies be more effective? Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria (B. burgdorferi). The disease spreads to humans through the bite of a tick that carries the bacteria, and affects an estimate every year in the US alone. Currently, health professionals choose between three antibiotics in Lyme disease. They're doxycycline, cefuroxime and amoxicillin. Sometimes, however, antibiotics are not effective to eradicate all traces of B. burgdorferi from the system, which means that the disease may persist. When this happens, bacterial cells that have developed antibiotic resistance can continue to proliferate. These are known as . Because of this, researchers have been looking for alternative ways to fight the bacteria, and their first line of research has focused on natural remedies. In 2018, an in vitro (in cultural cells) suggested that 10 essential oils derived from plants could help combat B. burgdorferi. Now, researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD, and the Center for Functional Medicine and Health at Focus in Berkeley have conducted a new study that has led them to believe that two specific plants can lead to more effective therapies against Lyme disease. "Many thousands of Lyme patients today, especially those with post-stage symptoms that have not been treated effectively, have a great need for effective and accessible treatment options," says the co-author of the Dr. Sunjya Schweig. In their study, whose findings appear in the journal, researchers analyzed the potential of 14 different plant extracts to kill B. burgdorferi. They compared the results with those of two of the traditional drugs used against Lyme disease: doxycycline and cefuroxime. Researchers faced each of these plant extracts against the free (plankton) agitated B. burgdorferi and this bacteria — additions of bacterial cells. In vitro tests suggested that the extracts of seven different plants were more effective against Lyme disease bacteria than doxycycline and cefuroximo. The plants in question were black walnut (Juglans nigra), cat claw (Uncaria tomentosa), sweet wood (Artemisia annua), Mediterranean thread (Cistus incanus), Chinese pumpkin (Scutellaria baicalensis), Ghanaian quinine (Cryptolepis sanguinolenta), and Japanese knot (Polygonum cuspidatum). Researchers point out that those who had the highest antibacterial activity directed against B. burgdorferi were Ghanaian quinine and Japanese knot. The active ingredient in Ghanaian quinine is an alkaloid called, which people have traditionally used against malaria, hepatitis, septicemia and tuberculosis. The Japanese knot has an antioxidant called . Some studies have suggested that resveratrol may have anticancer properties, and may protect the health of the heart and brain. "This study provides the first convincing evidence that some of the herbs used by patients, such as Cryptolepis, black walnut, sweet wood, cat clutches, and Japanese knots, have a powerful activity against the bacteria of Lyme disease, especially the inactive forms of persistence, which are not killed by the current Lyme antibiotics," says co-author Prof. Ying Zhang. In the current study, scientists observed that extracts of Ghanaian quinine and Japanese knot prevented free degarranting bacteria from proliferating, even when they were present in low concentrations, of 0.03-0.5%, in laboratory dishes. The two plant extracts also killed entire microcolonias of the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. In fact, only a 7-day treatment with quinine ghanes extract 1% was able to eradicate the bacteria in laboratory dishes. What's more, the bacteria couldn't make a return after this treatment. At the same time, some of the other natural compounds that the researchers tested offered insignificant results or not. This was the case with extracts from the seeds of grapefruit, green chiretta (Andrographis paniculata), ashwagandha, stevia, the tea of filling (Dipsacus fullonum), and Japanese tea. Researchers also tested some other substances that the anecdote evidence had indicated could be effective against Lyme disease. These were colloid silver, monolaurin monoglycerid, and LL37 antimicrobial peptide — also found immunitarian human cells. None of these substances have a significant effect on B. burgdorferi. While current findings indicate that many plants have the promise in the treatment of Lyme disease, researchers warn that animal and human studies are still necessary to confirm the effectiveness and safety of natural remedies. "Patients and their doctors are increasingly resorting to herbal remedies such as additional treatment options, and we hope that these findings will help to point the way towards a greater understanding of these therapies. But more preclinical studies and clinical trials will be required to establish evidence for the effective treatment of patients with Lyme disease."– The co-author of studies Jacob Leone, Ph.D. "Patients and their doctors are increasingly resorting to herbal remedies as additional treatment options, and we hope that these findings will help signal the way to a greater understanding of these therapies. But more preclinical studies and clinical trials will be required to establish evidence for the effective treatment of patients with Lyme disease."– The co-author of study Jacob Leone, a doctor in D.C., Jacob Leone, Ph.D., also recognizes potential conflicts of interest, stating that he is the "owner of two naturopathic medical practices, FOCUS Health Group and Door One Concierge, who [produces] treatment of patients with tick-borne diseases."
